The Measure of a Man
The Measure of a Man I like most men view their father as the symbol of how to be a man or how not to be one. I am fortunate enough where my father is my personal measurement of what a man should be. I believe I use him as my standard whether I realize it or not. When I meet other men be it at work or guys I am friends with. It kind of gives me a standard of people I want to associate with. This isn’t some sort of checklist. Rather I think it’s something that's become inherent. More than this I use my father as the standard of the type of man and now father I think I should be. It’s hard to put something like this into some kind of outline, but I’ll give it a try. Knowing I’ll never be able to put everything in them way it should be. These are some of the general life things I’ve learned from my father. - First and foremost to me was my father being there for his family no matter what. - Providing for his family whether that was going to work everyday or fixing up our house - Being willing to defend your family no matter what. I’m not saying to be the toughest guy around. Just the willingness to protect and defend your family is all that’s needed. - Showing your family you love them and telling them everyone needs to hear it once in awhile - Humility being humble is such an admirable trait and very few people talk about it. - Being able to have fun with your wife and kids. Getting down on the floor to play or wrestle with the kids it does more than words can say. - Discipline everyone needs it your kids especially. If you don’t give it to them where are they going to get it from? - Stoicism not being closed off but, being able to handle situations and not let especially your kids see how tough something might be. It’s not their job to worry - Have integrity and be accountable for your actions you can’t be write all the time and it takes a big man to admit a mistake. - Not backing down if you believe in something and the willingness to fight for something you think is right. There’s way too much to list I just wanted to put down a few things. Luckily for me my father is still pretty young and I hope to have many more years to learn from him. I don’t think this subject is over either. I think I will add other parts to this. |
